After the funding delay of our project and the global pandemic still ongoing, we are finally ready to (slowly) start again with lab work. Today we isolated High Molecular Weight (HMW) DNA from a female butterfly (Hipparchia sbordoni) sample and a blood sample from Lauretta the Marsican bear to prepare PacBio libraries. We isolated DNA using a very cool isolation kit that uses a small disk which is able to capture the DNA included in the tissues of the animal. Check the nice pictures we captured, the fluffy cloud attached to the disk inside the tube, is actually a very big amount of HMW DNA! We will use this DNA to build long reads libraries that will help to reconstruct the genome sequence of our species.
